The original Mario games

Mario is a popular video game character created by Nintendo. He first appeared in the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong, and has since gone on to star in a number of successful video games. As of 2020, there have been over 35 official Mario games released.

The original Mario games were 2D platformers, in which the player controlled Mario as he ran and jumped his way through various levels. These games include classics such as Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario World. In recent years, the series has expanded into other genres, such as racing (Mario Kart), sports (Mario Tennis), and role-playing (Super Mario RPG). However, the platforming genre remains the most popular type of Mario game.

The Super Mario games

Since the first Super Mario game was released in 1985, there have been a total of 31 games in the series (not counting re-releases and compilations). The most recent mainline Mario game is Super Mario Odyssey, which was released in 2017. Here is a complete list of all the Super Mario games:

The Super Smash Bros. games

The Super Smash Bros. games are a series of crossover fighting games published by Nintendo, with the first release in 1999.

The games typically feature characters from multiple Nintendo franchises, who battle each other using unique abilities. The games have achieved commercial and critical success, with critics praising the gameplay, music, and graphics.

As of March 2018, there are six main Super Smash Bros. games: Super Smash Bros., Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. There are also numerous spin-off titles in the series, such as the “Smash Run” mode in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, and the “Smash Tour” mode in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

The Paper Mario games

The Paper Mario games are a series of role-playing video games developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo. The first instalment, Paper Mario, was released in 2001 for the Nintendo 64; subsequent entries have been released for the GameCube, Wii, Wii U, and Switch.

The Luigi’s Mansion games

Luigi’s Mansion is a series of video games that follow the character Luigi as he tries to rid haunted mansions of ghosts. The first game in the series was released in 2001 for the Nintendo GameCube, and featured Luigi as he explored a haunted mansion and used a vacuum cleaner to capture ghosts. The game was well-received, and spawned two sequels: Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, released in 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS, and Luigi’s Mansion 3, released in 2019 for the Nintendo Switch.

The Wario games

The Wario games are a sub-series of the Mario franchise, focussing on the character Wario. The first Wario game was released in 1992 for the Game Boy, and since then there have been a total of 18 Wario games released (not counting spin-offs or remakes). The most recent Wario game, WarioWare Gold, was released in 2018 for the 3DS.

The Yoshi games

The Yoshi games refers to the Yoshi franchise that is a series of platform games that primarily stars Yoshi. The games are published by Nintendo. The first game in the series, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, was released in 1995 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).

The Donkey Kong games

The Donkey Kong games are a series of arcade and console video games featuring the character Donkey Kong. The original Donkey Kong game was released in 1981, and subsequent games in the series have been released on numerous platforms. As of June 2014, there have been 33 releases in the Donkey Kong series.

The spin-off games

In addition to the main series, there are numerous spin-off games featuring Mario. These include sports games, such as the Mario Kart, Golf, Tennis, and Baseball series; role-playing games such as Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario; party games such as the Super Smash Bros., Mario Party, andMiiseries; and educational games such as the Brain Age and Art Academy series.
